The Summer Food for Kids Program gives Dare County children access to healthy, nutritional food choices throughout the summer months. Approximately 42% of students enrolled in Dare County Schools meet the federal eligibility criteria for free and reduced breakfasts and lunches. This meal program ends, however, when the school year ends.
Because hunger doesn't take a summer break, the Beach Food Pantry and Surf Pediatrics are working together with other local community organizations to provide food to children and their families. This year's program will run from June 11, 2018 through August 17, 2018. Eligible families will receive a small bag of staple items and, are eligible to sign up to receive a box of food every week for ten weeks - based on family size - from the Beach Food Pantry. The Pantry offers a variety of nutritional choices, like fresh fruit, vegetables, bread, cereal, meat, eggs and cheese. In 2017, the Pantry served 303 children aged 0-4 and 1130 children aged 5-17.
